Timothy
Akimanzi

Timothy’s art faithfully communicates his fascination with the iconic beauty of his homeland.

Naturally drawn to the dramatic topography of the Land of a Thousand Hills with its imposing volcanoes, gleaming lakes and meandering rivers, Timothy’s art faithfully communicates his fascination with the iconic beauty of his homeland. His travels are also integral to his process as evidenced by his recent pieces that are just as likely to reflect the stark and hauntingly beautiful topography of Scandinavia as they are to celebrate lush, tropical Rwanda.

While commonly said to resemble aerial landscapes, Timothy’s pieces convey the wide-ranging emotions we all go through in our day-to-day lives. In turn, like the Rorschach’s tests to which they have also been compared, this art is designed elicit a multitude of interpretations, all of which the artist is always keen to discover. A mixed media artist, Timothy chiefly employs acrylic and metallic paints, making use of complex layering and hallmarked by intense, liberal use of colour and a high degree of experimentation - particularly with with texture- that the artist deems central to his growth.

In 2016, Timothy was hosted in the cities of of Stockholm, Arvisdjaur and Lurea by the Swedish government to showcase and to demonstrate the therapeutic properties of art for refugees in Sweden. He later once again represented Rwanda in a creative force project supported by the Swedish Institute. Timothy lives in Kigali surrounded by the breathtaking hills and valleys of sunny Rwanda but continues to explore the fjords and glaciers of the world.
