OPENING TO MEET DEMAND IN RWANDA’S GROWING ART MARKET
29 MAY, 2014, KIGALI—Today, Inema Art Center opens Rwanda’s first gallery exclusively devoted to art at Heaven Restaurant in Kiyovu.
“Until now, art in Rwanda has always been sold at the same location where it’s been made,” said Innocent Nkurunziza, co-Founder of Inema Arts Center. “Today marks an incredible milestone not only for Inema, but for our country. The Inema Gallery at Heaven Restaurant will be Rwanda’s first gallery exclusively devoted to the sale of art.”
Inema Art Gallery at Heaven Restaurant showcases African art—from contemporary mixed-media expression to traditional portraiture. In collaboration with Heaven Restaurant, art will continue to reach wider audiences, both national and international. With the new gallery, Inema now will be able to showcase a wider variety of artists from Rwanda and around the world.
“It was only a year and a half ago that we ventured to open Inema Art Center,” said Emmanuel Nkuranga, co-Founder of Inema Art Center. “Many said we shouldn’t do it—that there wasn’t a market for art in Rwanda; that our ambitions were too big or our vision too unrealistic. This Gallery proves that the Rwandan art market is not only alive, it’s thriving.”
The popularity of Inema Art Center—with an estimated 5,000 visitors last year—has demonstrated that Rwanda’s art market is not only big enough, but on a rapid ascent. The Inema Art Gallery demonstrates that Rwanda can accelerate growth in art and creativity like never before.
The Inema Gallery will connect that are back to the artists, creators, and innovators of all ages at Inema Art Center. Following the preview, Inema Art Gallery will hold a formal opening June 30.
